Augmentation Mammaplasty is an aesthetic (cosmetic) surgical procedure to increase the size of breasts. Augmentation Mammaplasty will also correct slight sagging of the breast and can increase breast firmness. Augmentation is a popular procedure for women who have lost breast volume through time, weight loss or pregnancy, and for those who never had any to begin with, it reliably produces desirable results.
There are a number of options to consider when deciding to have a breast augmentation: The shape, type and location of the implant; the position of the scar; and most importantly the size of the implant. These will be decisions made by you and Mr. Bloom at the time of your consultation.
Augmentation Mammaplasty is performed under general anaesthesia in hospital. The surgical approach, type and size of implants are individualized for each patient. Drains are rarely required.
Complications whilst uncommon can occur. The complications of breast augmentation include: incorrect positioning, infection (requiring implant removal), asymmetry, shape problems, wound breakdown, poor scars, nipple irregularities, implant rupture and capsular contracture (hardening of the implants). Most women who have breast implants can expect to have another operation for one reason or another at some stage in their life. Although unusual, nipple sensation may be temporarily or rarely permanently altered by breast implant surgery.
In most situations you will able to go home on the day of your surgery, however the length of your hospital stay will depend on your general health, the extent of the procedure, and your surgeon's advice.
Returning to normal activities is an individual matter, but most people return to work within two to four weeks and to more vigorous exercise after six weeks.
To be able to drive a vehicle you must be comfortable, off all strong pain killers and moving freely, this can vary from one to four weeks after the operation.
Following the surgery you will need to wear a supportive bra for six weeks.
