Many women with very large breasts encounter a variety of medical problems, as well as feeling self conscious and negative about their appearance. The most common problems encountered are back and shoulder pain, inability to exercise, limitation of clothing choices, self consciousness, poor posture and intertrigo (fungal rash under the breasts).
Breast reduction surgery has a very high level of patient satisfaction. Very large breasts are burdensome, and reduce quality of life. After breast reduction, most patients are extremely positive about the improved quality of life they experience.
Reduction Mammaplasty is performed in a hospital under general anaesthesia
There are currently several techniques for Reduction Mammaplasty. They all aim to remove excess breast tissue, and fat as well as recontour the remaining breast tissue, and reposition the nipples. The new breasts are smaller, lighter, and more in proportion to the patient's overall shape and size. Mr. Bloom will take your physical condition and requirements into consideration, and will determine which technique would be best for you.
The trade off with all forms of breast reduction surgery is a scar. The scars are situated around the areola of the nipple and under the breasts. They usually fade over 6-12 months.
Complications from the surgery can include: an alteration in sensation of the nipples, inability to breast feed, a slight difference in size between the breasts, slow wound healing and minor revisional surgery.
In most situations you will require at least overnight stay in hospital after your breast reduction. The length of your hospital stay will depend on your general health, the extent of the procedure, and your surgeon's advice. Drain tubes generally are not needed.
Returning to normal activities is an individual matter, but most people return to work within two to four weeks and to more vigorous exercise after six weeks.
To be able to drive a vehicle you must be comfortable, off all strong pain killers and moving freely, this can vary from one to four weeks after the operation.
Following the surgery you will need to wear a supportive bra for six weeks.
